NAVY 250 Years
On October 13th 1775, the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy. After the Revolutionary War, the United States Constitution empowered the new Congress "to provide and maintain a navy." On April 30, 1798, Congress established the Department of the Navy.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt officially declared October 13th as the U.S. Birthday.
